One of my fondest memories of working in theatre-- building this beautiful design by Huaixiang Tan as her assistant costume designer. This was a regional premiere of "The Chinese Lady", an incredibly moving, heartrending, hilarious show about the first known Chinese woman in the United States, Afong Moy.
Moy was a side-show attraction in the mid 1800s, and our task was to recreate an authentic Han ensemble that transitions in different scenes to show the passage of time as her circumstances change-- but she never leaves the stage. Tan devised a series of removeable pieces, such as undersleeves and a traditional mamianqun skirt, and I built them all from scratch with her rendering as a guide.
